Biotechnology company Carbios has successfully demonstrated the use of its enzymatic biorecycling technology for textile-to-textile recycling. The company tested the process on complex PET-rich textile waste under conditions that simulate industrial-scale production, marking an important step towards commercial textile recycling.
During the trials, Carbios converted more than 95% of the textile waste into virgin-quality monomers within 24 hours. According to the company, the recycled monomers are of the same quality as those produced through its existing recycling process for PET packaging, showing that the technology can effectively handle both packaging and textile waste.
Following the successful results, Carbios is expanding its licensing program to the textile industry. The company noted that the global textile market is approximately twice the size of the PET packaging market, creating significant opportunities for the adoption of its recycling technology.
