Biotechnology company AMSilk is preparing to increase the large-scale production of its silk proteins through its partnership with Ajinomoto Foods Europe (AFE). As part of the next phase of their collaboration, which began in 2023, the two companies have signed a long-term manufacturing and supply agreement.

AFE has extensive expertise in large-scale fermentation and biomanufacturing. Once the new production line reaches full capacity, it will be able to manufacture commercial volumes of AMSilk’s silk proteins. These bio-based materials are used in a range of industries, including textiles, automotive, and personal care.

The manufacturing facility in France offers several advantages, including its close proximity to customers and easy access to raw materials. Producing the silk proteins in France is also expected to add value for customers who associate French manufacturing with high quality.

“As we move into the next phase of growth, expanding our production capacity is a key priority,” said Christian Wichert, Chief Executive Officer of AMSilk. He added that AFE’s manufacturing expertise and central European location make it an ideal partner for supporting the company’s growth. According to Wichert, the new dedicated production line is an important step towards bringing AMSilk’s technology to the market on a larger commercial scale.
