A snakeskin-print bomber jacket from the new Stella McCartney x H&M Spring 2026 collection marks the global retail debut of BioFleax, a 100 percent plant-based performance textile developed as a sustainable alternative to fossil-fuel-based synthetic fabrics.
BioFleax has been developed by Leaf Bio and is based on PEF (polyethylene furanoate) technology. Unlike PET polyester, which is derived from fossil fuels, PEF is produced entirely from renewable plant-based resources. Leaf Bio’s manufacturing process uses renewable biomass and agricultural byproducts, including straw, to create the core chemical components required for the fibre.
The material has also received the world’s first ISCC PLUS certification for its core components. This certification verifies the sustainability and traceability of bio-based materials throughout the supply chain and helps support transparency claims within the fashion industry.
In addition to its sustainability benefits, BioFleax has been designed to deliver high performance. According to the company, the fabric combines the comfort of natural fibres with the durability and versatility of synthetic materials.
The material reportedly offers moisture regain levels three to five times higher than conventional PET fabrics and dries 60 percent faster, improving moisture management and wearer comfort. BioFleax also features natural antibacterial properties and built-in UV protection without requiring additional chemical treatments or metal-based additives commonly used in traditional performance textiles.
