Vietnamese textile and garment cos leaving market due to unstable policies

At a workshop held by the World Bank (WB) and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Truong Van Cam, deputy secretary general of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas) said that many textile and garment companies due to the state’s unstable policies are leaving the market.

According to analyst, the government seems to be too optimistic about opportunities to be brought to the textile and garment sector by TPP.

Nandan Denim Ltd (NDL), Ahmedabad based denim fabric maker armed with one of the most sophisticated weaving plants and other facilities, today manufactures superior grey cotton fabrics, khakis and denims. They have earmarked a capacity expansion plan to strengthen its domestic market share, expand exports business and have an increased focus on value added segments.

Nandan plans to increase its production capacity to 110 million metres per annum by the next quarter. At present, it has a denim production capacity of 71 million metres per annum.

The textile sector has been facing chronic energy shortages and stuck-up exports refunds due to which textile and clothing exports plunged from $9.166bn to $8.363 billion in the first eight months (July-February) of 2015-16 in the same period last year, a drop by 8.76 percent, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data.

The decline in exports, from July 2014, was despite the preferential market access to the European Union as government failed to capitalize on the opportunity of Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status.
