Indian spinning mills are looking to domestic demand from the garments sector for relief from oversupply situation caused due to decline in cotton yarn exports to China. China has been a major importer of cotton yarn from India with a share of about 46% of Indian exports of the commodity, but that has declined substantially – to an estimated 4% in the first three quarters of FY2015 – undermining the health of Indian spinning mills.

CCI chooses Bangladesh for export of cotton comes through its global tender

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has finally decided to come out with global tender for export of cotton to Bangladesh. CCI chose Bangladesh as the logistics are better and easier to manage either by the sea or roadways. China, the world’s biggest buyer, is importing less of the fibre from this year which has affected Indian export.

China has been the largest importer of Indian cotton over the last three years. According to CCI CMD BK Mishra, the response from Bangladesh has been good and should this sale be successful, CCI has plans to tap Vietnam as well.

The International Textile Machinery Shipment Statistics released by the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF), shows that shipments of textile machinery across segments declined in 2014, although marginally. Offtake of new short-staple spindles fell 15 per cent in 2014 from their levels in 2013 while that of long-staple spindles and open-end rotors increased 70 per cent and 2.6 per cent respectively. The number of draw-texturing spindles shipment increased 12 per cent during the year.
