KVIC take steps to modernize Khadi production

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has identified Gandhigram Khadi Trust to implement Khadi Reform Development Programme and take steps to modernize khadi production to make it a feasible business for weavers.

Under Khadi Reform Development programme, the KVIC has agreed to supply 75 new charkhas and 10 new improved handlooms to weavers in Gandhigram and surrounding villages.

In the first phase, 50 charkhas had been supplied, said Trust secretary K. Shivakumar, while distributing charkas to weavers on Saturday.

Sutlej Textiles and Industries, the flagship company of KK Birla Group, has got approval for the Rs233 crore deal for the acquisition of Birla Textile Mills, the textile division of Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd., location at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh from the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

Sutlej Textiles in a filing to the BSE said that the Competition Commission of India has communicated to them their approval of the Proposed Combination.

The Indian textile and clothing sector likely to see slow growth in exports this year, especially sectors such as cotton yarn due to decline in demand from China, according to industry sources. Last financial year it had registered 41 billion dollars worth exports.

The sources said that China was one of the major markets for cotton and yarn exports from India. Though textile mills were now exporting to countries such as Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia, the demand from China was huge.

During trading week at cotton market, fine grade lint demand combined with buyers’ eagerness for fine and second grade cotton for blending purposes kept physical prices firm while spot rate stayed in steady zone. Buyers at major stations of Punjab and Sindh remained busy buying fine grades as demand of better grades was growing on back of producing better textile products while potential buyers made deals for all grades in order to build up their inventories before shrinking fine grade lint, dealers said.

Ichalkaranji-based union leader Datta Mane had approached the Bombay high court regarding release of untreated effluent in the Panchganga against which the Bombay high court on Wednesday asked the textile units to make the common effluent treatment plant (ETP) in Ichalkaranji fully operational within nine months, precisely by March next year. Ichalkaranji is a textile town and it has 12-MLD ETP.

Trading activity on the cotton market on Saturday witnessed improvement as needy spinners indulged in buying cotton to meet their needs. The official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 5450, dealers said.

In the ready session, over 5000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5400 and Rs 5650, they said. Seed cotton prices in Sindh were at Rs 2600-2700 and in Punjab rates were at Rs 2800 and Rs 2900, they said.

Russia technical textile and nonwoven industry to get additional support

The Russian government is considering providing additional state support to its domestic producers of technical textiles and nonwovens. Russian Minister of Industry and Trade plans to provide funds which will help producers to complete currently implemented projects and to launch new ones.

According to an official representative of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, part of the funds will be also invested in the technical modernization of the national industry of technical textiles and nonwovens, as the share of outdated equipment in it remains very high.

CITI sought additional allocation of funds under TUFS for spinning sector

The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) on Friday sought additional allocation of around Rs.3,000 crore under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) stating unhealthy conditions faced by spinning sector.

The additional allocation will help clear the subsidy amount pending for earlier commitments from December 2014 to March 2015 under the TUFS scheme and also for new investments this year.
