Vietnam, one of the biggest garment exporters in the world with $24 billion worth of exports in 2014 and to put out such big volume of goods the industry needs 6.5 billion meters of cloth more a year. The Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) was introduced to make available funds to the textile industry for upgrading technology at existing units as well as to set up new units with state-of-the-art facilities. The government is now planning to tweak the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) in the textile sector and may end interest subsidy provided to mills against investments made by them, as it intends to rationalise various dole-out-based schemes.

Acrylic staple fibre price plunges in Asian market

In the fourth week of September, offers for cotton-type staple fiber fell US cents 25 a kg in China while medium-length staple was down US cents 27 a kg. Taiwan origin 3D bright tow offer declined US cents 10 a kg.

Jilin Chemical Fiber’s list prices for September was flat at August with 1.5D at US$2.46 a kg, 3D medium-length at US$2.45 a kg, tow at US$2.53 a kg and top at US$2.67 a kg.

Acrylonitrile prices sinks as demand weakens

In the fourth week of September, Asian acrylonitrile markers slumped US$46 a ton both CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia. In China, spots offers rolled over.

Asian acrylonitrile prices continued to march lower amid persistently weak demand. Traders followed prevailing price level while buyers bought hand to mouth.

Downstream demand was lukewarm as run rate at ASF makers was close to 100 per cent while ABS market held stable in spite of lower prices in a few cases.
Acrylamide producers reduced operating rates on poor end user demand and thin trades.

Textile manufacturing becomes costly in Zambia

With continuous depreciation of Zambian currency, textile makers are finding it too costly to import raw materials in Zambia as it would increase the cost of production, said Ajit Desai, managing director of Kariba Textiles.

The blankets are manufactured by using materials like acrylic yarn and fibre, which are not produced in the local market thereby making it costly to manufacture blankets in Zambia, he said.

Desai opined other investors to help in reducing the cost of producing blankets by focusing on yarn manufacturing domestically.
