Pak govt to launch a probe as exports of cotton cloth falls

In a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) held on December 31, 2015, Finance Secretary Waqar Masood Khan commented that decline in the export of cotton cloth despite enjoying cheaper electricity and gas was not justifiable and called for investigating the matter in order to determine the actual consumption of cotton yarn by the textile mills.

Finance Minister and ECC Chairman Ishaq Dar also suggested further analysis of the data to find out the actual reasons and factors responsible for the drop in exports.

UK develops viruses to save Muga silk industry of India

In order to save Muga silk industry in India, researchers at the University of Leicester in Britain have developed viruses that could halt the decline of 'Muga' caterpillar in India which produces one of the finest silks in the world.

Muga caterpillars, which produce a highly valuable silk, are dying from bacterial infections, in Assam, India.

During the last few years, the caterpillars have been in decline because they are eating infected leaves.

The researchers believe that the viruses which they have developed would save the silkworms from disease.

New textile policy await Cabinet approval

Textiles Ministry to seek approval for the new national textile policy from Cabinet for which they will be approaching the Cabinet in 10-15 days, said Union Minister Santosh Gangwar today.

The new policy aims to achieve USD 300 billion textiles exports by 2024-25 and envisages creation of additional 35 million jobs.

The policy also aims to address concerns of adequate skilled work force, labour reforms, attract investments in the textile sector, and to provide a future road map for the textile and clothing industry.

Weakening yuan likely to create threat to Indian apparel exporters

India exported a total of 2.56 million kgs of polyester spun yarn to 47 countries in November 2015 totaling US$5.73 million, out of which 16.8 percent was shipped by Turkey. The unit price realization was averaging US$2.24 per kg down by US cents 39 a kg and in value terms it was also 9.7 percent down as compared to November 2014.

In November, thirteen new destinations were found for polyester yarn of which, Nigeria, Ecuador, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo and Mauritania were the major ones.

Nylon yarn price tumbles as raw material price weakens

In China, semi-dull FDY70D/24F prices were down US cents 7 a kg in the last week of December while FDY40D remained unchanged.

Nylon DTY 70D/24F prices fell US cents 6 a kg while DTY 30D/10F prices rolled over.

Monofilament 30D remained flat on the week while 1.5D staple fiber further declined US cents 4-11 on the week.

Low operating pressure due to softening of caprolactum and semi-dull nylon chips prices, nylon filament yarn prices continued to moderate.

Caprolactum price edges down in China

In China, liquid good offers in spot market edged down to US$1,525-1,540 a ton while solid goods fell to US$1,585 a ton in the last week of December.

Sinopec announced January contract nomination at US$1,585 a ton for liquid goods while DSM Nanjing announced nomination at US$1,590 a ton for liquid goods and US$1,625 a ton for solid goods.

Asian markers, the SE and FE markers were pegged at US$1,240-1,260 a ton while December contract price for high-end goods were not announced.
