India and the EFTA members to resume talks on the long-stalled proposed free trade agreement, the agreement is important as it will give market access to several sectors from India such as textiles and chemicals. Senior officials of the four-nation bloc will visit New Delhi in mid January to iron out differences related with the pact, an official said.

The four European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members are - Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

Acrylonitrile price declines despite rising upstream cost

Asian ACN prices declined US$70 a ton in the second week of December while Southeast Asia fell US$75 a ton on the week. In China, offers for offshore cargoes were down US$70-80 a ton on the week.

Acrylonitrile prices caved in although feedstock propylene and crude oil values were up that week. Downstream demand was stable as acrylic fibre prices held stable, and suppliers ran at 75% capacity. ABS sentiment held firm on cost support, with domestic producers generally offering at stable rate. Acrylamide prices remained steady.

Kerala state government has come out with a revival package to bring back glory to its ailing traditional sector, Handloom. According to officials with the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles, some 3,400 traditional weavers to be roped in during the initial phase will be assured work for 300 days.

The traditional weavers, who had been forced to go in search of greener pastures owing to lack of work and poor wages, would be wooed back and cooperative societies that closed shop would be persuaded to resume functioning.

Trading activity slowed down as ginners were reluctant in new purchasing because quality was not matching with their psychological levels causing decline in rates on the cotton market on Tuesday, dealers said.

The official spot rate after maintaining a stable trend for a long time came down modestly, shedding Rs 50 to Rs 6200. In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2600-3250 while that in Punjab, phutti rates were at Rs 2800 and Rs 3500, as per 40 kg.
