Bangladeshi jute exports to India fell in both January and February this year. Year on year, jute goods exports slumped 52 percent to 6,872 tonnes in January and 37 percent to 6,155 tonnes in February, according to data from Beanpole customs, after New Delhi imposed antidumping duties on the natural fibre-based products from Bangladesh.

India slapped the antidumping duty – ranging between $19 and $352 a tonne -- on January 5, following which, shipments from Benapole land port, which handles over 90 percent exports of jute goods.

NYU Tandon School of Engineering Assistant Professor Miguel Modestino and Sophia Haussener of the École Polytechnique Fédéral de Lausanne (EPFL) have developed a process they believe will lighten nylon’s environmental impact.

Their process uses solar panels to drive the electrochemical reduction of acrylonitrile (ACN), which can be derived from plant waste, to adiponitrile (ADN) and hydrogen. This in turn will be synthesized into hexanediamine (HDA), one of the existing precursors to Nylon 6,6.

Canada, one of the major export destinations for Bangladeshi manufacturers, witness drop in garment shipment in the first half of this fiscal year by 7 percent to $437.78 million. The decline is due to global slump in demand for apparel, said Faruque Hassan, vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Expor-ters Association.

In recent years, Bangladesh's competitors like India, Vietnam, Cambodia and Sri Lanka have managed to increase their shipments to Canada, which might be another reason for the decline, Hassan said.

Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) is all set to develop first-of-its-kind mega textile park on 70 lakh square meter of land owned by the state government at Pinjrat in Olpad taluka of Surat district with an initial investment of Rs1,500 crore.

The SGCCI has formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV)-Textile Processing Park Association (TPPA) for the mega textile park. It has also appointed 15 directors to head the SPV for the mega textile park.

Polyester yarn price falls in China, India

In Shengze, offers for 32s polyester yarn fell US cents 5 a kg in the fourth week of March. In Qiangqing, 32s weaving yarn offers fell US cents 2 a kg on the week.

Spun polyester yarn markets in China were steady but offers declined with some sporadic numbers weakening somewhat. In Qiangqing, polyester yarn offers moved down as well amid quiet transaction in line with PSF price fall in recent weeks. Sentiment also weakened continuously due to fading sales in downstream.

PTA price dips in Asia

Asian PTA prices gave back US$3 a ton CFR China and CFR Southeast in the fourth week of March. Purified terephthalic acid prices dipped a bit that week in Asian markets on weaker sentiment, particularly in North East.

In China, PTA market moved down further that week despite major producers Hengli Petrochemical and Yisheng Dahua announcing turnarounds at their Dalian plants, beginning 25 March in early-April, respectively, for two weeks. Meanwhile, declining paraxylene prices eased cost support to PTA markets.
