The Uttarakhand government in India has proposed linking Bichchu Grass, also known as Himalayan Nettle or Urtica dioica, with the Central Government’s Technical Textile Mission. The aim of this proposal is to strengthen the rural economy of the state and create new employment opportunities for farmers and local artisans.

Bichchu Grass, locally called Kandali or Sisoun, has traditionally been viewed as a wild plant. However, its natural fibres can be processed into eco-friendly and sustainable textiles. By promoting its use, the initiative has the potential to place Uttarakhand on the global map as a contributor to environmentally responsible clothing and textile production.

The proposal highlights the strong potential of Bichchu Grass for the textile industry. Fibres extracted from the plant are known to be durable, gentle on the skin, and capable of providing good thermal insulation, making them suitable for producing high-quality garments.

Agriculture Minister Ganesh Joshi stated that the state government is also planning to establish a mini textile park. This facility would focus on processing fibres from Bichchu Grass and hemp, further supporting local production and value addition within the state.
