Unifi, Inc. UFI's recycled fiber, REPREVE, is now even more transparent. The Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI) scores for the company's flagship recycled brand have been received. The Higg MSI (version 3.2) is the most comprehensive tool available for sustainability researchers, designers, and product developers are looking to make better material decisions.
According to the Higg MSI research, REPREVE produced in the United States decreases global warming potential by 21% compared to generic, mechanically recycled polyester and 42% compared to ordinary virgin polyester. The global warming potential of the Higg MSI is linked to greenhouse gases.
Based on the score, REPREVE has a smaller carbon footprint than equivalent materials. When compared to generic rPET (recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate), one of the most widely used plastics in the world, organizations, and consumers can significantly reduce their environmental impact by using REPREVE. REPREVE is also the first eco-performance fiber that has been verified by U TRUST® to certify recycled content claims.
James Cooper, Unifi Sustainability Manager, said that the results of their REPREVE Life Cycle Assessment have been verified and accepted into the Higg MSI, demonstrating their commitment to transparency. REPREVE, which is made in the United States, has a lower global warming potential than regular rPET, giving their clients a proven method to reduce their environmental impact and achieve their sustainability goals.
The Higg MSI scores are intended to provide credible data about a product's performance and to verify its long-term viability. These findings serve as a public scorecard for revealing a product's environmental profile and statistics, giving designers and customers alike the knowledge they need to make sustainable purchase decisions.
A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) technique evaluates the environmental consequences of a product or service throughout its entire life cycle, including emissions and material resource use. Furthermore, it gives a more precise estimation of environmental trade-offs, allowing companies to prioritize impact reduction in goods and services using more trustworthy and transparent data.
The Higg MSI ratings are based on an LCA assessed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, a worldwide, multi-stakeholder nonprofit coalition for the consumer products sector, and its technology partner, Higg Co.
Unifi’s CEO Eddie Ingle, said that at Unifi, they work today for the good of tomorrow, and these results confirm their view that the expansion of REPREVE is having a beneficial influence on the future. By purchasing or employing REPREVE recycled fibers, consumers and businesses can be certain that they are making a more conscientious and long-term effect on the present and future. To their shareholders, this openness strengthens their commitment to REPREVE and the growth potential it offers with consumers and companies as they shift their attention to sustainable alternatives.
