This recycling hub in Finland offers sustainable solutions for the textile industry

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2021-02-17 15:09:59 – Finland

The challenging impact of the textile industry on the environment calls for new sustainable solutions. The equilibrium between the raw material availability for fiber production and the disposal of textile waste in the landfills is being hugely imbalanced. The textile production and consumption process involve harmful outcomes.

Finland is offering innovative remedies for textile waste handling, treatment, B2B and B2C sales and usage; recycling to the identification and back to waste handling.

Marika Ollaranta, Head of the Bio and Circular Finland program from Business Finland, expresses that replacing conventional raw materials with recycled ones will have a positive impact on the global system and the entire textile value chain. Government, consumers and industries are realizing the challenges of the textile sector and now creating awareness and changing the mindsets and behaviors towards sustainability without compromising with the level of quality and reasonable costing.

Rester collaborates closely with Southwest Finland's municipal waste management company LSJH and a project that brings together the private and public sectors in textile waste handling. Fibers made out of the wood pulp and discarded fibers by Spinnova and Infinited Fibre Company has enabled Emmy Clothing Company to create a resale-as-a-service for clothes, which makes it possible for all actors in the ecosystem to participate in prolonging a textile's life cycle.  NordShield's CEO, Kristoffer Ekman, says they want to make the new normal as safe as possible by eliminating the usage of non-sustainable, non-renewable and toxic ingredients in antimicrobial fabrics and textiles. They are offering a superior alternative for antimicrobial products that will have a positive impact on the environment and will also reduce the chemical waste stream in the environment. The revolutionary NordShield Brilliant Technology "Northfield BioLayr is a durable antibacterial solution that can be used for a variety of products and can be used for sanitizing hands, feet, surfaces and even community face masks. NordShield Brilliant Products, for its immediate stimuli, contains alcohol that kills germs and for long-lasting efficacy, it has a disruptive technology that is based on a unique layer that does not evaporate but forms of physical armor-like barrier on the treated surface.

A Nordic online marketplace for cloth reselling, Emmy Clothing Company enables its customers to efficiently resell, discover and buy high-quality fashion; also provides them with complete transparency regarding the availability, quality and delivery options. Emmy's CMO, Taru Marjamaa, says increasing clothing longevity is their mission and they want to offer the customers a fun, effortless and rewarding way to recycle their clothes.
