Stella McCartney has teamed up with materials science company Balena to unveil a new eco-friendly version of its S-Wave Sport sneakers. This collaboration highlights the brand’s continued focus on sustainable design.

The sneakers feature soles made from Balena’s BioCir Flex, a bio-based material that can biodegrade into renewable biomass when composted in industrial settings and can also be recycled for reuse. Created from renewable sources such as castor beans, natural oils, and polysaccharides, the material is dyed with natural cinnamon and offers the same durability as TPU and the flexibility of rubber.

The white edition of the sneaker includes Piñayarn mesh panels, crafted from pineapple leaf fibres that are collected from agricultural waste. This innovative textile offers a zero-waste, plant-based alternative to petroleum-based plastic fabrics.

The Wine-colored version uses an engineered knit made from recycled polyester for the upper, with accents created from a recycled suede substitute. The tongue and inner lining are made with sustainable hemp, and the brand label is made from organic cotton — all aimed at reducing reliance on virgin synthetic materials.

Stella McCartney has previously led efforts in sustainable fashion, introducing products made from plastic-free vegan leather and plant-based sequins.
