Stella McCartney launches world's first parka jacket using biological recycling

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2023-12-04 17:08:09 – United Kingdom

British fashion designer Stella McCartney has introduced a parka jacket in collaboration with US biological recycling company Protein Evolution at COP28. This innovative garment is crafted using artificial intelligence and biology to generate raw ingredients of polyester from plastic waste instead of relying on fossil fuels.

This partnership marks a groundbreaking achievement as the world's first garment made through biological recycling, signaling a significant stride for the fashion industry's pursuit of sustainability and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional materials like polyester and plastic.

The parka takes inspiration from parachute styles featured in Stella McCartney's previous collections. The fabric used in the parka is a result of Protein Evolution's Biopure technology, transforming rigid packaging waste and industrial textile strappings (previously used to secure freight containers) into high-quality polyester.

Biopure employs AI-designed enzymes to break down polyester waste into raw materials indistinguishable from those derived from petroleum. This breakthrough eliminates the need for new fossil fuels in polyester production, contributing to a more sustainable and circular fashion industry. Once integrated into the manufacturing process, these raw materials create infinitely recyclable polyester with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to polyester produced from traditional petroleum-based sources. Biopure technology can handle various waste streams, including plastic bottles, clamshells, and industrial textiles.

The collaboration between Protein Evolution and Stella McCartney showcases a pivotal moment in achieving textile-to-textile circularity in the fashion industry, providing a viable alternative to landfill or incineration for fabrics and extending the life of materials indefinitely. McCartney's early investment and partnership with Protein Evolution through her SOS Fund highlight a commitment to driving sustainable innovation in the fashion sector.
