A special ‘Aadi’ discount sale of silk saris from across the State has been organized to provide opportunities for the weavers to showcase their products and improve their livelihood. The exhibition was inaugurated by Minister for Handlooms and Textiles S. Gokula Indira on Tuesday in Madhurai.
The exhibition-cum-sale has on display products by weavers involved with cooperative societies from Thirubuvanam, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Salem and Kumbakonam.
Speaking at the inauguration, Ms. Indira said that this exhibition is also a good opportunity for the people to get a taste of a variety of silk saris which have been woven at different places. The Thirubuvanam Weavers Cooperative Society, in particular, has been introducing around 30,000 new designs every year which are very popular.
The products on display include silk saris in different designs that come certified with ‘Silk Mark’.
Handloom weavers spend several days to make one silk sari and through this display, the weaver’s efforts hopefully will be appreciated by the public. Through the discounts offered which is ranging from 10 percent to 45 percent on silk saris at the Aadi sales has made the exhibition more accessible to the public, said Minister for Cooperation Sellur K. Raju.
The State at present has 1,164 handloom weavers cooperative societies and 181 powerloom weavers cooperative societies, out of which 824 societies had recorded profits during the previous year.
The Aadi exhibition cum sale is held at L.N.S. Illam and will continue till August 12.
