Russia a potential market for wool export

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2014-01-15 10:30:00 – Australia

After a noticeable absence it re-entered the Australian market in 2012. In that year Russia imported one million kilograms of wool, compared with zero the year before.

The Australian Government is now working towards developing the relevant export certification to increase wool exports and meet the opportunities Russia presents.

The Australian Government is working out a deal with Russia to increase wool exports to the former Soviet Union.

A spokesperson from the federal Department of Agriculture said that the Australian Government welcomed Russia's interest in Australian wool as the Australian Government is aware of the potential of this export market.

The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are working closely with Russian authorities to establish access for Australian wool to the Customs Union.

A number of import requirements are being discussed, including relevant export certification which attests to information such as Australia's animal health status.

Although significant progress has been made, it is difficult to predict when negotiations will conclude.

The move from the Federal Government aligns with Australian Wool Innovation's (AWI) initiative 'To Russia with Wool'.

AWI has identified Russia as a major opportunity for Australian wool which was outlined in its 2013/14 to 2015/16 strategic plan. Moreover, Russian people are confident of the economy and are ready to spend money on apparel and the Russian cold weather meant accessories such as gloves, hats and scarves were a necessity and opportunities also existed in woollen outwear products, children's wear and thermal wear.

According to AWI, the Russian clothing retail market is one of the sixth largest in Europe.
