Nylon waste
Biological recycling company Protein Evolution and biodiversity mapping leader Basecamp Research have announced an expanded collaboration to combat global waste from polyurethane and polyamide (nylon). Protein Evolution’s AI-driven Biopure™ technology, which already breaks down polyester waste, will now utilize Basecamp Research’s biodiversity mapping system to access enzymes targeting polyurethane and polyamide waste.
These materials, prevalent in various industries, pose a significant challenge for circularity due to their complex composition, constituting 10 percent of global plastic production. Connor Lynn, co-founder of Protein Evolution, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting how their Biopure technology provides a practical solution for addressing fashion waste and global decarbonization goals.
The collaboration aims to design novel enzymes capable of breaking down the complex structures of polyurethane and nylon into their precursor molecules. This circular approach not only addresses recycling challenges but also reduces the carbon footprint of resulting products while maintaining quality.
Dr. Glen Gowers, co-founder of Basecamp Research, emphasized their shared belief in nature as inspiration for solving global challenges. The collaboration combines Protein Evolution’s scale-up expertise with Basecamp Research’s biodiversity mapping, accelerating the development of enzymatic plastic recycling processes.
This strategic partnership not only enhances the capabilities of biological recycling but also aligns with global sustainability goals, attracting attention from leading brands seeking innovative solutions.
