Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company (TWIC) is preparing a feasibility report on the proposal to set up combined effluent treatment plants (CETPs) for textile dyeing units at five location in the region. The report will be submitted to the State Government in a couple of months.
Ashok Natarajan, chief executive officer of TWIC said that they are getting feasibility report ready for the project that is planned at Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Komarapalayam and Karur and stakeholders meetings have been conducted for the purpose.
The project will get 50 percent grant from the Central Government and 25 percent grant from the State Government. The balance 25 percent will be invested by the industries and also purchase land for the plant. Land has been identified in most places for this purpose.
TWIC are helping to form clusters and also study the characteristic of the effluents discharged by the units. The plants will go in for zero discharge of effluents and waste water recycling. The total project cost is expected to be more than Rs. 1,000 crore.
According to K. Vijayakarthikeyan, Commissioner, Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, effective water management is the need of the hour as the Corporation is at the cusp of bringing in 24 x 7 water supply.
TWIC are the key consultant for the 24×7 water supply scheme to be implemented in Coimbatore.
Towards water security, the State Government has proposed two desalination plants in the sourthern districts.
It is also looking at two sewage treatment plants at Koyambedu and the treated water will be supplied to the automobile units in and around Chennai. Industries in Coimbatore can also look at purchasing water from such plants.
