Philippines opens banana fiber textile innovation hub

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), has officially launched a P6 million Natural Textile Innovation Hub in Benito Soliven. The new facility aims to convert banana fibre into high-value textile products while creating livelihood and business opportunities for rural communities.

The initiative supports the directive of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to strengthen innovation-driven industries, expand rural employment opportunities, and increase the value of local agricultural resources through science and technology.

According to Leaño, the initiative is expected to strengthen Isabela’s growing natural fibre industry while encouraging sustainable and science-based enterprises in rural areas.

He explained that DOST allocated P6 million for the purchase and installation of technologies required to process banana fibre into textile materials.

Leaño added that the project reflects the government’s commitment to supporting local industries through science, technology, and innovation while creating additional income opportunities for farmers and community-based organisations.

He stated that the facility will help local producers make better use of agricultural waste, particularly banana stalks, by converting them into marketable textile fibres suitable for handicrafts, woven products, fashion materials, and other environmentally friendly applications.
