Nike launches most sustainably-minded performance shoe

US-based sportswear brand, Nike focused on reinventing its Air Zoom Alphafly Next% shoe in a way that would reduce material waste and impact, with climate change and its influence on both the future of the earth and sport in mind which is called the Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature.

According to Nike, every Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature component was built using circular design concepts, material innovation, and athlete feedback — including 400-plus miles of product testing — and contains at least 50% total recycled materials by weight. As a result, Nike claims that the running style is their most environmentally-conscious performance shoe to date.

Nike Running senior footwear product director Rachel Bull said that Nike’s commitment to runners is as strong today as it was when the first waffle sole stepped onto the track. But, innovation is no longer simply about what’s on a runner’s foot. The stakes have been elevated as a result of climate change. It has an effect on runners and all athletes all over the world. They understand that they have a responsibility to rise to the challenge.

The Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature features responsive ZoomX midsole cushioning constructed with at least 70% recycled foam, as well as Air Zoom Pods produced partially from recycled TPU. There are also propelling Flyplates underfoot, which are manufactured with at least 50% recycled carbon fiber.

The uppers are manufactured with Nike Flyprint, a 3D printed material made with at least 20% recycled TPU, and Nike Flyknit, which is made with at least 45% recycled polyester and is designed to be supportive. The brand said, when compared to standard upper fabrications, the Flyknit technique reduces waste by 60%.

Outsoles featuring a mix of higher abrasion compounds and Nike Grind Rubber, as well as woven labels and laces produced with 100% recycled polyester and a no-sew film created with 50 percent recycled TPU, are among the shoe’s other sustainable features.

In a statement, Bull said that when it comes to running shoes, athletes shouldn’t have to pick between performance and sustainability. They recognize they have a responsibility to do more in service of the world, and they’ve pushed themselves to start with their most sophisticated innovation — the Alphafly. From making the Alphafly Next Nature, they learned and advanced in circular design concepts, waste reduction, material innovation, and pattern efficiency, which will inform further models in the future.

The Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature is part of Nike’s Move To Zero project, which aims to achieve zero carbon and waste across the corporation. Nike claims that the changes made to the shoe’s production will help it get closer to its goal of diverting 100% of waste from landfills and reusing at least 80% of it in its products and other items by 2025.
