Muji, Cotton Incorporated partner to recycle used jeans

Muji, a Japanese retailer, is collaborating with Cotton Incorporated for denim recycling. It will be a part of Blue Jeans Go Green program to collect and recycle denim.

Under this scheme, the consumers can bring old, unwanted jeans to the Muji’s U.S. stores and receive $10 off on a new pair of brand’s jeans. However, all denim brought should have no less than 90% cotton to be eligible for the scheme. This denim will be sent to Blue Jeans Go Green’s processing partner, Bonded Logic, Inc. to be converted into housing insulation materials.

The Blue Jeans Go Green has successfully reduced textile waste for nearly two decades. It has helped divert more than 2,290 tons of denim from landfills with over 4.5 million pieces of denim recycled. Brands like American Eagle, Madewell and Pacsun have also been a part of this program and have encouraged their customers to recycle denim.
