Marici, a plant-based luxury accessories company, will debut exclusively in Selfridges on July 8 as part of the retailer's 'Project Earth' luxury designer edit. Marici will be the only brand in Selfridges' premium selection to use Pinatex, an eco-friendly alternative to leather that does not rely on plastics and fossil fuels for its production
Pinatex, a biodegradable fruit leather created from discarded pineapple leaves, is made using leftovers from the existing pineapple industry, which are purchased directly from farmers themselves. The vegan-friendly material is created without using any additional land, water, pesticides, or fertilizer.
This material is then recycled into high-end material and then handcrafted into the bags by a team of skilled artisans based in Venice.
Following three years of research, the London-based label established as a collective in 2020 in direct reaction to what it terms the continuing environmental effect of both the synthetic and conventional leather sectors.
The group of like-minded people targets to combine slow fashion, innovation, and tradition to create a bold and beautiful brand that is both environmentally conscious and visually stunning, with a focus on circular design economy and a regenerated mindset to provide consumers with a considered and mindful alternative.
Marici founder and designer Amanda Navaian, said that they want to produce an upgraded premium product with little environmental impact and great social responsibility. To provide a gentler alternative to Mother Nature while maintaining a high level of aesthetics and quality.
Slow fashion is also at the core of Marici's creative process, with each handbag being handcrafted in small batches and numbered to produce timeless items that will "stand the test of time and be passed down from generation to generation.
Marici launches drop one exclusive at Selfridges and include the ‘Queen Mother,' an exquisite tiny bag with snap closure, the ‘South Ken,' a micro-bag with leather top handle, and the ‘Natasha,' a soft oversized clutch. All of them are available in a range of colors, including off-white and black. The price ranges from £490 to £3,600.
