Levi’s Vintage revives the 1942 501 with limited-edition launch

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-08-14 13:53:58 – USA

Levi’s Vintage has introduced the LVC 1942 501, a limited-edition reproduction of the original 1942 501 jeans. The new version is made from 12-ounce shrink-to-fit selvedge denim, reflecting a period when heavier denim was beginning to replace the lighter fabrics used in earlier years.

According to Levi’s, the original 1942 501 was created at a time when the United States was preparing for full wartime production. The jeans represented a period of change, combining newer, heavier denim with design details that were still rooted in earlier decades.

The limited-edition LVC 1942 501 has been reproduced stitch for stitch from the original design. It features a mid-rise, straight-leg fit made from 12-ounce shrink-to-fit cotton selvedge denim. Other details include an inverted yoke seam placed over the leg panel, hidden rivets, a single-needle arcuate, a single-sided Big E Red Tab and the Two Horse leather patch.

One of the most distinctive features is the cinch back, which includes a buckle and a unique construction where the left and right sides are sewn in opposite directions. Levi’s noted that wartime restrictions led to the removal of the cinch back from the original design within a few years. As a result, this combination of traditional details and heavier denim was only present for a short period.
