Leading fashion retailers establish textile waste association

The Association for Textile Trash Management was established in collaboration with Decathlon, H&M, Ikea, Inditex, Kiabi, Mango, and Tendam with the goal of controlling the waste generated by the Spanish market for clothing and footwear.

The group hopes to increase textile recycling in the area by working with the Collective System of Extended Producer Responsibility (SCRAP) laws and advancing a circular economy through the creation of waste management techniques.

The association claimed that it would make it possible to comply with SCRAP, which is a proposed piece of national legislation.

The law, which is expected to take effect by December 2024, will mandate that regional organizations collect textile waste separately.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) is creating systems of expanded producer responsibility for textiles over the course of three years prior to the law’s enforcement.

One representative from each firm will also sit on the association’s Governing Body, and the group’s leadership will begin with Mango.
