The Korvaa Consortium has introduced the world’s first shoe created using a unique blend of mycelium, bacterial nanocellulose, and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), pioneering a new direction in sustainable design through bio-based innovation.
This experimental footwear project brings together science, design, and art to explore the possibilities of materials grown from nature. Developed in collaboration with leading biomaterial innovators, Modern Synthesis, Ecovative, and Ourobio, the shoe is a result of combining cutting-edge technologies that mimic nature’s systems to address design challenges sustainably.
Modern Synthesis, a London-based material science company, contributed to the shoe’s upper using bacterial nanocellulose, a natural byproduct of fermentation. Through their proprietary process, this substance is transformed into durable and functional textiles and coatings.
By uniting innovation and storytelling, the Korvaa project steps away from conventional manufacturing and offers a glimpse into the future of fully biofabricated fashion, showcasing what’s possible when nature-inspired design and scientific advancement converge.
