Jute mills urge Bangladesh govt to lift export ban

A delegation of jute mill owners urged the Bangladesh government to lift the ban on the export of the raw fibre in the wake of supply constraints in Indian mills.

Indian Jute Mills Association said that prior to the ban, a large number of contracts had been signed between Bangladesh raw jute sellers and Indian jute mills owners and traders.

Commitments about 50,000 tonnes of raw jute are involved in these settled contracts. The imposition of ban will result in non-fulfilment of this contract.

Indian Jute Mills Association led by Chairman Manish Poddar requested Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh Zokey Ahad that the ban, imposed through an order dated December 2, needs to be withdrawn in the interest of commerce between two friendly neighbours, who are also SAARC members.

Last month, the Government had said it will take up the issue of raw jute export ban imposed by Bangladesh.

The Textile Ministry had asked the Ministries of Commerce and External Affairs to take up the matter with the neighbouring country for lifting the ban on export of raw jute.
