French designer Jean Paul Gaultier will unveil 30,000 vintage pieces that will be available for rental. In an effort to embrace slower fashion, the Paris-based company will showcase some of its most iconic items as well as archival runway designs.
Gaultier will administer its new rental category in-house, marking the start of a new chapter in the company’s reinvigoration and innovation. For its first haute couture collection, the brand teamed up with Lil Nas X and Sacai.
Rental costs are projected to range from 150 euros for a scarf to 700 euros for a short-term evening gown loan.
The maison will also establish a vintage segment with 50 items for sale sourced from private clients and third-party dealers. On resale sites, Vestiaire Collective and Depop, Jean Paul Gaultier’s classic corsets remain among the most popular things.
Antoine Gagey, Jean Paul Gaultier CEO, said that they want to explore new ways of buying and experiencing fashion by mixing in the same platform, hinting at the wealth of pieces available in the company’s archives.
Gaultier’s halcyon collections may have inspired a bigger and younger audience, but they may not have had the opportunity to see them in person.
