Sporting goods retailer Intersport Swenden has partnered with not-for-profit organization CanopyStyle to advance forest-friendly supply chains. In doing so, they positioned crucial points for the world’s forests, biodiversity, and climate on the board.
With CanopyStyle policies, INTERSPORT Sweden has joined the more than 520 leading fashion designers and apparel businesses worldwide, who collectively bring in more than $886.5 billion in annual revenue. In order to support the development of low-carbon, circular, Next Generation alternatives, INTERSPORT Sweden has vowed to avoid sourcing any textiles from the world’s Ancient and Endangered Forests.
Prominent climate scientists have emphasized the importance of forest protection in the fight against climate change and in keeping global warming to 1.5°C by 2030. In order to scale Next Generation alternatives, such as textiles created from recycled materials or agricultural waste, and restructure “take, make, trash” supply chains, we urgently need to achieve this level of conservation. Moving away from sourcing from the world’s Ancient and Endangered Forests is another requirement.
Every year, 92 million tons of used clothing are produced worldwide. In addition to having a hugely good effect on the environment, recycling this waste stream to produce new materials can also stop the annual felling of 300+ million trees, many of which come from significant forests, for the purpose of producing viscose. The adoption of Next Generation Solutions is already being heavily promoted, and Canopy and INTERSPORT Sweden are already taking part.
Hanna Wolff, the Production & Sustainability Coordinator at INTERSPORT Sweden, said that the company values moral conduct and recognizes the importance of respecting the rights of people, animals, and the environment for its success. The sports and apparel business can take steps to ensure that textiles made from forests, including viscose and lyocell, do not come from significant forests and to make the switch to lower-impact alternatives. INTERSPORT Sweden is committed to upholding this goal with the aid of Canopy.
