Intrinsic Advanced Materials (IAM) is working to increase the use of its CiClo technology, a biodegradable additive used in polyester and nylon fibres, as fashion brands look for solutions to reduce the long-term impact of microplastic shedding.
Andrea Ferris, CEO and co-inventor of CiClo, said that brands are increasingly focusing on responsibility and circularity as connected strategies. She explained that companies are now aiming to develop more responsible materials and products from the start, rather than relying only on recycling methods later.
CiClo is added during the fibre production stage. According to Intrinsic Advanced Materials, independent laboratory studies show that fibres made with CiClo can break down in less than four years when exposed to conditions such as seawater, soil, or wastewater. The company states that the process leaves behind only natural elements.
