Haryana varsity develops two new cotton varieties giving high yield

Two new varieties of cotton– H1316 and H1353, are American cotton varieties which are high yielding as well as resistant against sucking pests and have better ginning outturn have been developed by Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University based out Hisar.

The Central Variety Identification/Release Committee in the All India Coordinated Research Project meeting held at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana has identified these varieties for release in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat states of the Central India.

New varieties are suitable for cultivation under irrigated and rainfed conditions, respectively. The potential yield of these varieties was 2,926 kg/ha and 2,825 kg/ha, respectively.

In the coordinated trials, variety H1316 gave mean seed cotton yield of 1,988 kg/ha in the Central Zone against 1,524 kg/ha of zonal check variety LRA5166 and 1,742 kg/ha of local check variety.

Similarly, the other new variety H1353 recorded a mean seed cotton yield of 1,365 kg/ha against 1,010 kg/ha of zonal check LRA 5166 and 1,142 kg/ha of local check variety.

According to K S Khokhar, Vice-Chancellor of the University, for the first time cotton varieties developed in one zone have been released in other zone of the country for cultivation, usually cotton varieties are released in the zone in which these have been developed.
