French designer develops ocean-based sustainable textiles

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-04-21 17:15:04 – France

French artist and designer Eugène Riconneaus is launching ER Ocean Recherche, a dedicated research and development center focused on creating innovative, ocean-sourced sustainable materials for the fashion industry. The first innovations to emerge from this initiative include SeiShell, a marine-based alternative to leather and fabric, and SeiYarn, a yarn made from ocean materials that can be used to develop eco-friendly textiles.

SeiShell is a plastic-free coated canvas that can replace traditional leather. It’s available in various thicknesses and tinted with natural marine pigments. This sustainable material can be produced in large-scale roll formats and is suited for a wide range of uses, including fashion and automotive design.

SeiYarn offers a sustainable alternative to viscose or rayon fibers. It has the versatility to be used in applications ranging from delicate silk-like lace and knitwear to more durable, high-performance fabrics.

Ultimately, Riconneaus hopes ER Ocean Recherche will serve as a bridge between designers and scientists. “We need stronger partnerships in this industry,” he said. “Fashion needs scalable solutions, and we must accelerate innovation. I may be a small part of this ecosystem, but I want to contribute to the larger change that’s needed.”
