First traceable ocean plastic fabrics

Sustainable textiles company, Waste2wear, will present the world’s first collection of traceable recycled ocean plastic fabrics at international textile fair Première Vision Paris (September 17-19).

The used plastic comes from a small island near Shanghai where, in collaboration with NGO’s and the local government, Waste2wear created a business model in which former fishermen could recover lost income by fishing plastic from the ocean, known as the Ocean Plastic Project; they now collect more than 30 tonnes of waste from the ocean every month.

The new collection, Ocean Fabrics, uses an embedded blockchain system to document and record the journey from post-consumer plastic waste to the finished textile product.

Tracking the products back to their source enables the company to address customers’ demands for traceability of recycled materials.
