Bangladesh signs MoU with China to modernise jute sector

Bangladesh is strengthening research and technology cooperation with China to modernise its jute industry and expand the production of high-value products. On October 18, 2026, the Jute Diversification Promotion Centre (JDPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Jiangnan University to support innovation and technological development across the jute value chain.

The collaboration is intended to strengthen technological capabilities across seed development, fibre production, fabric manufacturing and product diversification. The minister highlighted the need for improved seeds, higher fibre yields and modern processing technologies to increase the competitiveness of Bangladeshi jute products. Representatives from Jiangnan University said their visit to Bangladesh had helped them assess industry requirements and practical challenges.

The Chinese delegation also expressed interest in establishing joint research platforms with institutions including the University of Dhaka and Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX). Plans were discussed to establish direct links between the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), JDPC and Jiangnan University’s research laboratories to facilitate knowledge and technology exchange.

The partnership could support the development of alternative jute-based fibres, improved fabrics and diversified textile applications. By strengthening research, skills and manufacturing capabilities, Bangladesh aims to shift towards higher-value jute production and reduce its reliance on exports of raw materials and yarn.
