Eastman to support sustainable fiber growth

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-03-27 13:47:48 – Brazil

Eastman has announced a new phase of its partnership with SOS Mata Atlântica to support the continued development of its Naia Renew fibre, which is made from 60% sustainably sourced wood pulp and 40% certified recycled materials.

With support from the NGO, Eastman will expand its restoration work in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest by planting 11,000 native tree seedlings. These will be planted in areas within the Tietê and Paraíba do Sul river basins, regions that are home to around 12 million people and have faced environmental damage due to long-term urban, industrial, and agricultural activity.

Each restoration site will be monitored and maintained for the first two years to ensure long-term recovery. These efforts aim to reconnect fragmented forest areas, strengthen ecological pathways, and restore regions important for water resources. The initiative is also expected to support economic activity linked to forest restoration.

Ana Beatriz Liaffa, coordinator of the programme, noted that landowners involved in the project often develop a sense of responsibility toward the restored forest areas. She added that trees planted during earlier phases are already showing progress, with some providing shade for workers maintaining the sites.

The second phase of the programme is currently underway in the interior of São Paulo. It is helping to boost the local restoration economy by involving plant nurseries and rural workers in increasing forest cover.
