Converse are launching sustainable Chuck Taylors. If you’re looking for ways to make your wardrobe more sustainable and want to protect the environment, Converse have got you covered.
Converse have launched their ‘Renew Initiative’ with a range of Chuck Taylors that are made from discarded plastic bottles.
Through its Renew program, the brand aims to create its iconic streetwear in a more sustainable manner by using consumer and industrial waste.
The first lineup features the Chuck Taylor All Star and Chuck 70.
While the silhouette of the shoe remains the same, it will be crafted from 100% recycled polyester that comes from used plastic bottles and it will have recycled polyester laces.
The sneakers are made using a newly developed PET yarn which mimics the original cotton canvas and comes in a variety of colours available later this season, including ‘Moss Green’, ‘Ozone Blue’, ‘Wheat Pale Putty’, ‘Black’ and ‘Jane Stone’.
A statement published on the website of Converse’s parent company, Nike Inc read: “It blends a new approach to materials with inventive new methods of manufacturing, and with a singular aim: develop new and more sustainable ways of making Converse icons.”
Converse say that the Renew canvas has ‘the same feel and look as traditional Converse canvas, except now made from 100 percent recycled polyester that came from used plastic bottles.”
The brand also say their Renew denim uses jeans lifted from landfills and is the first example of Converse’s ability to upcycle fabric into Chuck.
Lastly, Converse says their Renew cotton – coming in 2020 – ‘transforms cotton canvas waste from the manufacturing process to create a composite 40 percent recycled cotton with polyester to form a new yarn.”
The Converse Renew Canvas will begin retailing on July 5th, with the Converse Renew Denim Chuck 70 slated for August.
