The district development commissioner, Pulwama visited cocoon auction market at sericulture complex Nikas. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner said that silk production has been one of the priority sectors of silk industry and its production is yet to meet the targets.
Hence, efforts should be made for promoting, popularizing and disseminating latest sericulture technologies through training and extension service support.
He also said that by extending market and transport facilities at the doorsteps of the farmers of the district, the cocoon production shall increase manifold.
He also urged to avoid middleman during selling process and expected that cocoon growers of the district shall fetch better dividends for their products in the open market.
During the cocoon auction market, a large number of farmers involved in cocoon rearing and sericulture related activities were also present on the occasion. The farmers interacted with people from outside the state interested in cocoon marketing.
Number of cocoon growers got good returns for their produce at the auction. Among the best quality cocoon producers, Muzaffar Ahmad Lone, Bashir Ahmad Lone and Mehbooba from Ladoo got Rs 63756, 57460 and 46700, respectively.
