Co-optex to join hands with Flipkart

Tamil Nadu Handloom Development Corporation, popularly known as Co-optex in a bid to take its finest products to a larger numbers of customers across the globe is all set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with 8-year-old Flipkart, an e-commerce major.

T.N. Venkatesh, Managing Director, Co-optex, on Saturday after inaugurating the renovated ‘Gandhimathi Co-optex Showroom’ at Tirunelveli Junction said that they plan to sign the MoU with Flipkart on May 15 with the objective of taking their products to a larger customer base through this online shopping firm.

He said that Co-optex, which was quite popular among people above 45, should be close to the hearts of the people in the age group of 25 and 40 and hence certain measures were being taken to attract them also. Right from refurbishing showrooms to introducing new products like organic saris, kurtis, linenware, designer saris, organic salwar, soft silk saris, readymade shirts, silk shirts and dhotis meant for younger generation etc.

The ‘organic saris’ are being woven with naturally coloured yarn obtained from the cotton grown in the fields where no pesticide or chemical fertilizer was used continuously for a period of minimum three years.

They are using natural dyeing agents like turmeric, banana, saffron etc. for colouring the yarn so that the organic saris would not give any irritation even during hottest summer. These revolutionary saris, priced between Rs. 2,800 and Rs. 3,500 (prior to the usual 20 per cent discount), are selling like hot cakes across the State and also outside Tamil Nadu where we’ve got their showrooms. On joining hands with Flipkart, market for their organic saris will have no geographical boundaries.

Co-optex to make their showrooms more attractive is spending huge sum on renovation of their existing showrooms. In this line, Rs. 8 crore would be spent for renovating 15 Co-optex showrooms during this fiscal.
