In the German research project bioPEtex, BB Engineering (BBE) is collaborating with several partners to develop textiles made entirely from bio-based polyethylene (PE). BBE is contributing its expertise in spinning and texturizing processes and is working to scale the texturing stage to an industrial level.
BB Engineering is participating in the project alongside RWTH Aachen University, with funding support from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. The company is advising on the spinning process while also developing the texturizing stage, a key step that strongly influences the performance and properties of the final textile fibres.
The project’s objective is to develop textiles made entirely from bio-based polyethylene that are both environmentally responsible and economically practical. BBE, which supplies spinning, texturizing, recycling equipment, and extrusion technologies to customers worldwide, is contributing its extensive experience in synthetic fibre manufacturing and recycling systems.
Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Managing Director of BB Engineering, explained that the company’s involvement in the project focuses not only on developing sustainable materials but also on creating economic value for customers. According to him, textiles made from bio-based polyethylene could help manufacturers reduce production costs while also opening up new market opportunities.
