BGMEA receives 2021 USGBC leadership award for green initiatives

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) the coveted ‘USGBC Leadership Award’ for the local garment manufacturers’ platform’s efforts to develop a green garment sector.

In a virtual press conference, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said that BGMEA is the world’s first organization to obtain such an honor. It is a big international recognition for them.

Bangladesh now boasts the most LEED-certified garment manufacturing in the world, with 143 LEED-certified garment factories.

The USGBC has recognized 143 manufacturers, 41 of which are platinum rated and the remainder are gold and silver-rated.

Hassan added that 500 additional textile factories are awaiting certification as green manufacturing buildings from the USGBC.

Nine of the top ten LEED-certified buildings are in Bangladesh, demonstrating the country’s efforts to follow excellent environmental standards during manufacture.
