The Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has developed what it describes as the world’s first automated, rail-mounted thermal-blocking textile system. The technology has been developed as a water-free alternative to expensive water-spraying systems used to control high railway track temperatures. It helps reduce the risk of track deformation and speed restrictions during extreme heat waves.

The system uses a light-reflecting magnetic “thermal-blocking textile” that attaches directly to iron railway tracks. The textile helps protect the tracks from strong sunlight and reduces the amount of heat absorbed by the steel.

The multilayer textile is attached to the sides of the tracks using strong magnetic forces. Its outer coating reflects more than 85% of incoming solar radiation. A layer reinforced with fiberglass provides additional protection by shielding the iron track from direct sunlight.

To ensure that the textile remains securely attached during high-speed train operations, KRRI has added two mechanical fasteners to the magnetic strips. This combined fixing system can withstand winds of up to 66 m/s, which is more than 1.5 times the strong aerodynamic force created when a KTX train passes at 300 km/h (186 mph).

Field trials carried out on the Gwangju Line in 2024 and the Jungbu Inland High-Speed Line in 2025 recorded a maximum reduction of 10.9°C (19.6°F) in track temperature. Testing by the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR) also confirmed the long-term durability of the material. The textile was certified for more than 10 years of continuous use without significant material degradation.
