Muslin, popularly know as Calico, produced in Kozhikode, who once caught the attention of people not just in the country, but far off in the Western and European market. But the knowledge and technique of weaving the cloth died with its weavers, some blame it on industrialisation and others on the neglect of the art. But now, the fate of the Jacquard cloth too seems to be following the same path and is on the verge of extinction in North Malabar.

The Tamil Nadu Weavers Cooperative Society’s some weaver artisans have decided to create a few designs using organic cotton and natural dyes. This idea came in after interaction with weavers artisans from other states. This will be a huge step for them as they would have to give up elaborate designs and instead settle for simple, plain prints on the saris they weave.

Bangladeshi home textile entrepreneurs despite challenges like European Union’s GSP facility to Pakistan and current political turmoil are lured to make more investment in the sector due to the growing global demand for local home textile products. A good number of home textile manufacturers such as Unilliance Textile, Mom Tex, Fariha Group, Pakiza Group and Sad Musa have already invested millions of taka in new factories and expansion of their existing capacity.

Bangladesh handloom industry, a major source of earning for many rural people, is facing tough time. The handloom weavers are struggling for survival and are now forced to shift to other profession due to low wage coupled with lack of capital from the government.

According to the BHB (Bangladesh Handloom Board) data, about 0.129 million handlooms were closed down (made inactive) over the last three decades due to fund crisis, throwing over 0.10 million weavers out of employment.

The National Silk Expo-2015 aimed at promoting and encouraging weavers and provide a market to the handloom industry began yesterday at the TTD Kalyan Mandapam at Himayath Nagar in Hyderabad city.

The exposition was inaugurated by Tollywood actress Mamatha Rahoot, Pancha mukhi movie fame. During the lauch of the expo Mamatha said that such platforms are required to reach out to women looking for well-designed handmade cotton wear and silk wear and exclusive home textile which blend different styles and concepts of silk handloom.

Pakistan Ministry of Textile is all set to restart cotton hedging in order to get ride of market uncertainty and to cover the risk of cotton price fluctuation after its approval in the new textile policy 2014-19.

Ministry of Textile would soon call a meeting, in which representatives of Karachi Cotton Association (KCA), ginners association and growers would be taken into confidence and their proposals or objections would be noted.

K.K. Birla Group flagship company Sutlej Textile and Industries Ltd has got approval from its Board of Directors to acquire another group company, Birla Textile Mills, which is a unit of Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd located at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, on the basis of a slump sale.

India, the largest producer of organic cotton (approximately 70 per cent of world production) and also home to the largest number of Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS)-certified processing facilities to host the first international GOTS conference: strong partnership for success in Mumbai, India.

More than 1,300 GOTS certified facilities are in India representing more than one-third (approximately 35 percent) of the total number of GOTS certified facilities worldwide.
