Disagreement over textile quotas from Britain between S’pore and KL

Singapore and Malaya received separate export quotas from Britain, before the formation of Malaysia. In 1964, after Singapore had become part of the new nation, Britain decided to issue a single quota for Malaysia. A verbal spat broke out between Singapore and Malaysia's central government after Singapore Finance Minister Goh Keng Swee blamed Kuala Lumpur for the collapse of textile talks between Britain and Malaysia.

He lashed out at the central government for wanting to give the lion's share of British quotas for textile exports to Malaysian states other than Singapore.

Gandhigram Trust (GT) to make available its natural dye Khadi saris and other textile materials in its sales outlets in Madurai and Dindigul as it plans to tap high-end natural dye textile market in the southern districts.

The main objective of making natural dye saris in modern designs is to familiarize Khadi products among the next generation apart from expanding market base and boost income of weavers, said trust secretary R. Sivakumar.

Their showrooms in Dindigul and Madurai will be displaying their natural dye Khadi products.

Northern Tosrifa Group’s unit Tosrifa Industries, a garment exporter located in Tongi in Gazipur, produces knitwear such as polo shirts, T-shirts and tank-tops plans to set up an eco-friendly dyeing unit by raising capital from the public, to become self-sufficient in fabric colouring and boost profitability.

The company also plans to expand its sewing capacity by adding some 500 sewing machines.

The Anna Cooperative Spinning Mill manufactures cotton yarn and blended yarn located in Tamil Nadu is being modernized to improve production and quality of yarn would involve cost to the tune of Rs.30.3 crore, said S. Gokula Indira, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles during her inspection for modernization work at the mill on Friday.

The Tamil Nadu government had granted Rs.148 crore to modernize six cooperative spinning mills in the State.

Cotton prices were mostly stable in Pakistan local market

With cotton price maintaining stability, many medium-size textile mills continued to make need-based buying on day-to-day basis due to availability of limited working capital with them, a dealer said on Saturday.

In the local markets, trade turnover of cotton remained moderate at 5,900 bales (of 155 kilogram each).

Majority of the trade deals were made for a few hundred cotton bales across the country, said a broker at Karachi Cotton Exchange.

The demand for Indonesian goods is pretty high in Egypt, said Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt Nurfaizi Suwandi on the sidelines of the Cairo International Fair (CIF), the largest annual trade exhibition in Egypt and hence they are committed to continue increasing their exports to Egypt.

Bangladesh textile industry is dependent on import of fibres from foreign countries, thus the government need to take steps for making the rules industry-friendly, said Jahangir Alamin, former president of Bangladesh Textiles Mills Association (BTMA) addressing a session titled “Bangladesh Spinning Industry in Next Decade” at the Global Cotton Summit Bangladesh-2015 that began in the capital to enhance relations between buyers and suppliers of the product.

Pakistan textile and clothing exports during July-February had witnessed a nominal increase of just 0.47 percent as proceeds reached $9.179bn as compared to $9.136bn a year ago. But in February 2015 it has plunge to $1.087 billion compared to $1.119bn a year ago, a decline of 2.91 per cent, as per Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data on Friday.

Product-wise details show that export of low value-added products, such as cotton yarn, dropped by 0.69pc; cotton cloth 15.47pc; cotton carded 89.25pc; yarn other than cotton yarn 30.88pc and art silk 23.21pc.
