Cotton Corp plans to float global tender to sell stock procured under MSP

Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has procured cotton of around 9.1 million bales under the MSP (minimum support price) operation, all time high cotton inventory this year, surpassing previous record level of 8.9 million bales in 2008-09. CCI is planning to float a global tender. Initially to test the market tenders will be for 5000 - 10,000 bales (1 bale = 170 kgs) by the current month end.

Slow trading was witnessed on Friday on cotton market as cotton prices continued to remain on the higher side with dwindling cotton stocks and spinners kept looking for quality lint which is running in short supply.

The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) left its spot rates unchanged.

The textile industry, particularly the spinning sector expressed concern over the long delay in the arrival of next crop and falling cotton stock.

The Surat-based textile industry has been witnessing rise in inventories by 20-30 percent at textile units as the demand for textile products is more or less stagnant since last six months.

Due to economic slowdown coupled with liquidity crisis in the market has led to subdued demand for textile products from the city. Moreover, reduced demand has resulted in buyers keeping less stock with themselves leading to higher inventory for textile makers in Surat, according to industry sources.

Cotton imports of Pakistan are likely to rise per the figures of the US Department of Agriculture bureau in Islamabad which predicts an import of 2.0m bales of cotton in 2015-2016, the highest in 8 years.

The reason for the rise in imports is mainly subjected to the increase in cotton consumption. Pakistan cotton consumption of 11.35m bales in 2015-16, starting in August, would represent the highest figure since 2007-08 – before the world financial crisis which hit demand for the fibre, as an industrial commodity, particularly badly compared with that for food crops.

Bangladesh exporters yearn for tax at source on export earnings and tax on cash incentives to be waived or cut down in the budget for fiscal year 2015-16 to make it uniform for all exporters, as it is not a profit of the exporters.

The exporters, textile mills, jute and plastic sectors proposed to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to cut tax at source on export to 0.30 per cent from existing 0.60 per cent.
