India’s overall textile and garment exports that also include those of jute, coir, handicrafts and handloom items to not only miss the initial official growth target of 15% for 2014-15 but fall short of the 5% expansion rate expected until recently. The government had initially set the export target at $45 billion for 2014-15, compared with the actual exports of $39.3 billion in the previous fiscal.

The 15th Free Trade Agreement between Korea and Vietnam was signed in Hanoi on May 5 in the presence of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng. Minister of Trade, Industry & Energy Yoon Sang-jik and Vietnamese Industry & Trade Minister Vu Huy Hoang signed the Korea-Vietnam FTA which will eliminate 94.7 percent and 92.4 percent of their tariffs based on the amounts of imports respectively.

US vex over India handing out additional export subsidies to textile in FTP at WTO

US has expressed concern over the newly incentive package announced for textile sector in the latest foreign trade policy by Indian Government at a recent meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTOs) committee on safeguards and countervailing measures in Geneva.

The US has accused India of handing out additional export subsidies to the sector which has become globally competitive and should not be incentivized going by global trade rules.
