XSTOK raises funds from angel investors to expand its reach

XSTOK, a B2B platform to transact surplus textile goods, has raised Rs 3 crore or US$4.52 lakh from a group of angel investors and early-stage investment firm Oliphans Capital, a company statement said on 18 September. These funds will be utilised to expand its reach to a larger audience.

Founded in January by Sanjiv Khandelwal and Mihir Shah, XSTOK is conceived to serve cross sectional industries, but is currently active in the textile space. The company, the Indian textile industry generates $6 billion worth of surplus every year.

Chinese commerce minister Gao Hucheng’s recent visit to Bangladesh has buoyed hopes among Bangladeshi businessmen and international relations experts that bilateral relations will be strengthened over the next few months. During the commerce minister’s visit, China granted Bangladesh nearly US$ 100 million to set up an exhibition center and also expressed interest to invest $ 300 million in the South Asian country’s textile sector.

Tamil Nadu textile mills that make polyester or polyester cotton yarn having forced to stop production for two days a week for four weeks as prices for the yarn had dropped and the mills were find the price unviable and with export orders too declining have started exploring new markets and products, said Prabhu Dhamodharan, secretary of Indian Texpreneurs Federation.

Further, some mills have taken sample orders from buyers in Ludhiana, Delhi and Tirupur. They plan to study the customer demand, explore new markets and products, he said.

MEG price inches down in Asian market

In the first week of September, Asian MEG prices edged down US$7 a ton both CFR China and Southeast Asia. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes were at US$705-710 a ton, and counter offers were at US$695 a ton, with negotiations at US$700 a ton. Mono ethylene glycol prices moved down in Asian markets on bearish outlook and thin trading dragged bids lower. That week saw thin trading as China was on holiday for two days to celebrate Victory Day.

The Indian jute industry has been unable to scale up production or export of jute goods. The country's imports of finished goods have jumped up 24 percent, while exports have declined by 22 percent during April-January period of 2014-15. The government to protect the domestic jute industry has announced that that imported raw jute and jute yarn will not be used in the manufacturing of sacks which are used for packaging of commodities in the reserved sector, a notice from the office of the Jute Commissioner stated.
