Egypt’s biggest manufactured exports are garments and textiles. The industry suffered badly since the central bank began pegging the pound against the dollar after Egypt’s uprising in 2011, pricing its products out of the international market. The problem became more acute as currency controls tightened over the past couple years, with exports of garments plummeting by 14.7 percent in the year to end of June and those of cotton textiles by 7.2 percent, according to central bank figures.

Renewed buying interest from spinners and some exporter at cotton market on Friday pushes cotton prices higher. Cotton prices rose by Rs200 to Rs300 per maund (around 37 kilograms).

There were higher trade deals which helped cotton prices recoup their recent losses and finished around Rs200 to Rs300 higher on the ready counter, brokers said.

The Karachi Cotton Association raised its spot rate by Rs100, to Rs6,300 per maund.

The European bloc likely to remain the biggest export market for Pakistan’s textile sector in coming years despite a huge influx of Chinese investment in the South Asian nation was emphasized by Honorary Consul General of Pakistan for Finland Wille Eerola.

However, Pakistan textile lobbies should be aware that China itself was a big exporter of raw textile products and should also focus on other export products to increase its share in the European market and reduce dependence on textiles.

The Union Textiles Minister informing about the measures taken by the government to provide relief to textile and powerloom industry said that the government has approved the "Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (A-TUFS)" for technology up-gradation of the textile industry with one time capital subsidy for eligible bench-marked machinery for a period of seven years from 2015-16 to 2021-22, in place of Revised Restructured Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (RRTUFS).

Talks in the trading ring in Pakistan have confirmed that in a recent meeting the Sui Northern Gas Company has assured a delegation of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) to cut gas tariff by 28 per cent.
