Thousands of textile merchants and traders in Surat had shut their shops since the last two weeks protesting against the new tax structure have today called off their strike following the Centres assurance to look into their demand for its roll back.

The announcement to withdraw the protest was made today by the traders who met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Delhi yesterday.

Polyester staple fibre prices rise in India, China

Polyester staple fibre markets in June were up in China, however, downstream sentiment was relatively mute with a wait-and-watch mode.

In India, trading sentiment in PSF market improved slightly, while downstream spinners were still cautious to replenish inventories.

In Pakistan, PSF prices did not change on the month amid steady demand.

In China, 1.4D PSF was up US cents 3 a kg from May. In India, 1.2D PSF prices were up US cents 2 a kg from previous month. In Pakistan, prices in Karachi were down US cent 1 a kg on the month.

Polyester filament yarn prices stable to up in Asia

Polyester filament yarn prices in June were seen climbing in China as MEG and polyester chips continued small upticks. However, uncertainties persisted as some dyeing factories were restarted after the environmental inspection.

In India, POY offers were generally stable, as the markets awaited the GST regime to set in from 1 July.

In Pakistan, selling indications for DTYs were almost stable in Karachi market.

Textile calendar released to ensure livelihood for weavers round the year

The Handlooms and Textiles Department has released a textile calendar for procuring cloth from weavers commencing from May to April every year. This decision would not only reduce the burden on the State’s exchequer but also ensure livelihood to weavers round-the-year.

Handlooms and Textiles Minister KT Rama Rao, releasing the calendar in Hyderabad on Tuesday said that the State government is striving towards ensuring work for weavers throughout the year and ‘bring light to their lives which were forced into darkness’ by the previous governments.

No change in GST rate for textile

Union Minister for Finance, Defence and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley Tuesday said that the GST rate structure for the textile sector was discussed in detail in the GST Council Meeting held on 3rd June, 2017, wherein the Council recommended the detailed rate structure for the textile sector. The demand of textile traders to exempt fabrics under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system cannot be met with as manufacturers will then not be able to claim credit of tax on previous stages.

The wholesale textile markets in the Walled City Amritsar remain opened even ash the Federation of Textile Traders of Amritsar (FTTA) is yet to take a final call on the strike called to protest against the imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on unstitched clothes.

FTTA president Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia said that there is no division of opinion about the agitation among the business community. He said that most shops were opened to check any damage following the recent rains.
