Pak value added textile exports achieve growth with government support

Textile and clothing exports stood at $1.21bn in June, showing an increase of 24pc over the corresponding month a year ago. As per Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reports on Thursday, these exports posted a paltry growth of 0.04 percent to $12.45 billion in 2016-17. Data showed the readymade garments sector was the only bright spot.

Its exports grew 6pc year-on-year to $2.31bn in 2016-17. Garment exports witnessed a growth of 6.13pc in terms of quantity. These exports also posted a growth of over 20pc in June.

Cotton price remain firm

Trading activity at the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Thursday remains dull due to monsoon rains in the cotton growing areas of Sindh and Punjab with only single transaction of 200 bales of Sanghar at Rs6,300/maund recorded in the cotton market.

The spot rates remained firm at Rs6,300/maund (37.324kg) and Rs6,752/40kg.Ex-Karachi rates also stood unchanged at Rs6,435/maund and Rs6,897/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

According to an analyst, the trading activity might remain slow in the coming days, as well, as more rains are predicted.

Federal government urged to encourage cotton farming as a major crop among all categories of farmers in Nigeria. The Secretary Funtua Textiles Ltd (FTL), Alhaji Aliyu Bello-Ingawa, in Funtua on Thursday said that government should mobilise farmers to embrace the farming in view of cotton’s economic potentialities.

Government of India to control fluctuation in cotton prices and ensure availability of cotton for domestic mills has directed Cotton Corporation of India Ltd. to sell its stock of cotton (cotton season 2015-16), purchased under MSP, to Spinning Mills in the Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME) category.

The Minister of State, Textiles, Ajay Tamta in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question said that government reviews the cotton availability position from time to time.

Slow trading activity witnessed at cotton market

At the Karachi Cotton Exchange, slow trading activity was witnessed on Wednesday, while spot rates increased to Rs6,300/maund (37.324kg) and Rs6,752/40kg.

Ex-Karachi rates also increased to Rs6,435/maund and Rs6,897/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

KCE recorded trade of 1,400 bales from six stations in between Rs6,300/maund to Rs6,520/maund.

Trade was recorded from Shahdadpur, Mirpurkhas, Jamsabad and Golarchi in Sindh, while two stations of Punjab, Chichawatni and Burewala, also entered in the market with the new crop.
