Indonesia working on bilateral agreement with US to boost textile exports

The Indonesian government is seeking a bilateral agreement with the United States to boost its volume of textile exports. As currently, the US imposes a 12.5 percent import duty for their textiles, while it imposes zero percent for Vietnamese textiles because they already have a bilateral agreement, said Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta on Thursday.

Recently, a commercial dialogue--a forum has also been established that encourages the private sector to explore investment and trade opportunities in both countries.

The Textile and Clothing Institute of Botswana (TCIB) established last year to close the skills gap in the textiles and clothing sector is underused mainly as the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF) stopped sponsoring students to study for certificate courses, said TCIB founder, Mohammad Ghafoor.

Accredited by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA), the TCIB institution currently offers one-year certificate courses in cutting, embroidery, sewing, garment assembly, design and pattern making, commercial sewing skills and clothing manufacture.

The Indian Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) gave clarifications on its website regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The clarification was in response to complaints of mills asking raw silk and jute suppliers to mandatorily register themselves. Under the current GST regime, raw jute and silk suppliers do not need to register as both raw materials invite nil tax.

The Board further clarified that mills procuring raw jute and silk from unregistered suppliers are not required to pay tax under the Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM).

Unifi, Inc. a speciality textured yarn supplier has come to an agreement with the owners of Complast S.A. and Technologia Textil Avanzada (TTA), by signing a non-binding letter of intent to form a joint venture in Guatemala. Under the terms of the deal, the joint venture will continue the recycling, spinning and texturing activities of Complast and TTA with Unifi owning 51% of the joint venture and the existing owners of Complast and TTA owning the remaining 49%.
